The Baobab House was set up as a social enterprise to sell the products made at the Baobab School for Trades and Traditional Arts and to promote healthy eating and living through the vegan/vegetarian restaurant and the sale of herbal medicines. We also have a guest house where visitors can experience life in the very heart of historic Cape Coast, the former capital of Ghana.

You buy…
The Baobab Shop sells batik, kente weaving, recycled pure water sachet bags and purses, glass bead necklaces and earrings, art postcards, paintings, pottery, clothing and health products – such as Moringa powder, honey, different kinds of oils as there are: vergin Coconut oil, vergin Moringa, Baobab, Neem, Citronella oil and so much more. Nearly all products are from the Baobab School. Everything is “proudly made in Ghana”. You can also have dresses made for you, either using the batik from the shop or material that you bring yourself. Our fashion designer Mariama, a former student of our school, can sew something for you. You can order one day and it is usually ready for collection the next day.
You eat …
The small Vegetarian Moringa Restaurant is the perfect place to rest during your visit in Cape Coast. It lies between the Castle and the Market amidst the busy town. Our patio, built in traditional style, has a nice view over the sea and the busy Atta Mills Avenue. Our friendly staff, our Chef Isaac, Lydiah and Esther, all former students of our school, serve you at our Restaurant. Our Chef Mad Christie with Vida and Rose, also former students, prepare delicious healthy vegetarian meals, snacks for you. Our dishes with fresh tofu, soy and wheat chunks or oyster mushrooms are the speciality of our restaurant. Every day we offer a vegan local dish as our Daily Special. Vegetable Pies, Banana Cakes and Coconut Cakes are all vegan and made with wholewheat flour. Fresh Pineapple-Moringa Juice, Bisap or Ginger Juice are a must if you visit the Baobab Vegetarian Moringa Restaurant.
All the vegetables we use are washed in saltwater and many come from the school owned organic farm.
You sleep …
We have six nice guestrooms with a wonderful view over the sea and in the middle of the fishermen’s area of Cape Coast. Our rooms are furnished with cane and bamboo furniture with batik bed sheets and curtains, all produced by students of the Baobab School. Clean toilets and showers are shared in the courtyard. We have three double rooms for 150 GHC/ about 12 €, one three-bed room for 200 GHC/ about 16 €, one four-bed room for 260 GHC/ about 20 €. We can add additional student mattresses for 50 GHC/ about 4 € each in every room. In addition we have a dormitory for 6 people where you can book a bed for 85 GHC each/about 6 €.
In our Restaurant we serve breakfast with fresh coffee, tea, juices and our famous delicious pancakes.
We also have free WiFi for houseguests.
You support …
The most important aspect of the Baobab House is the idea of sustainability of the Baobab School. Our children can’t pay school, feeding or accommodation fees, but all our students stay at the school during the term. With this social enterprise we are able to earn money in Ghana in order to finance the running cost of the school and become more independent of sponsorship.
Another aspect is the education of the students and those who help regularly at the Baobab House get an idea of business, book keeping, cooking, catering and dealing with local and foreign customers. 9 former students have been employed at the Restaurant, Isaac is now the chef of the restaurant.
Another NON PROFIT enterprise has been started “Baobab Adepa Organic Farms” to help finance the school in future.
